Strictly Speaking: Week 9
You can always count on Strictly’s Musicals Week for some decent drama, although most of it was off the floor on this occasion – from Craig’s COVID-19 test to some excitable overmarking and a mildly controversial exit. Read my full Dancing … Continue reading

Drag is part of British culture – of course it belongs on Strictly
Talk about les misérables. A curmudgeonly 100 or so people have complained to the BBC about the Strictly professional dancers doing a performance in drag for Musicals Week. Read my full Telegraph article here

Strictly Speaking: Week 7
Well, that was a jolly Musicals Week. Although very strange to think it’s already the quarter-finals, when it feels like we’ve only just begun the series. Product of both a shorter Strictly, and time losing all meaning in 2020. I’m both … Continue reading

JJ Chalmers’ Chitty Chitty Charleston was a quick-step too far for the Strictly charmer
Musicals Week requires the celebrities to convince in both dance technique and, crucially, performance. That proved too big an ask for JJ Chalmers, who has been coasting by on his Scottish charm, heroism and judicious use of Prince Harry, while racking … Continue reading

Strictly Speaking: Week 11
Ah, Musicals Week – AKA Dressing-up Box Explosion 2: Wig Warz!. Pretty unsubtle work here from the Strictly producers and judges, with a clear division between sensible theme/dance matches and bizarre combos, and between sky-high quarter-final scores and mediocre ones. … Continue reading

Strictly Come Dancing 2019, Musicals Week: Karim Zeroual’s technique stops the show – and finally locates Craig’s 10 paddle
Dancing a jive to Hairspray’s “You Can’t Stop the Beat” might be unoriginal (it’s the fourth on Strictly so far), but it proved a perfect match for Karim Zeroual’s boundless energy – and gave us the first perfect score this … Continue reading

Strictly Speaking: Week 11
Musicals Week! The quarter-finals! All to play for on this jazz hands show, and the combination of high-stakes competition and rampant theming produced… mixed results. Some dances fit beautifully with their songs, others were swallowed whole – and the judges … Continue reading

Strictly Speaking: Week 11
Perhaps this is an unfashionable stance in the “tired of experts” era, but for me Strictly’s Musicals Week highlighted a more general issue with this series: we’ve had too much of our ballroom dancers attempting other styles, rather than their … Continue reading
