The messiness and painfulness of love examined

Photo by Johan Persson..jpg“What’s a night between friends?” That’s the question posed by this incisive study of desire and deception when it transpires the eponymous Reg – personifying Dionysian chaos and carnal abandon – has captured any number of hearts and loins.

Reg stalks the play hand in hand with AIDS, lending urgency to Kevin Elyot’s Chekhovian theme of time devouring unspoken yearning – ‘What might have been’ fades into ‘What can never be’. Tragically, Elyot himself passed away in June, narrowly missing this outstanding revival of his 1994 work.
